Landscaping in Helotes

Helotes is where San Antonio gives way to the Hill Country. Lots get bigger, ground gets rockier and the views get better. Many of our Helotes clients have an acre or more, a house set into a slope, and land that's mostly cedar, oak and limestone outcrops. They want to keep that character close to the house while making part of it usable.

Our Helotes work tends to be part landscape and part ranch work: terraced walls, long runs of fence, native planting that blends into the surrounding brush, and lighting that doesn't turn a dark hillside into a parking lot.

Local conditions

What shapes a Helotes yard

Soil

Thin and rocky, much like Boerne: a few inches of dark soil over caliche and limestone, with outcrops breaking through. Digging often means a jackhammer. We bring rock removal into the price instead of discovering it as an extra, and we use the stone we dig out in walls and borders whenever it's sound.

Terrain and slope

Helotes sits along the edge of the Balcones Escarpment, with canyons, creek crossings and steep lots. Backyards often fall sharply, and driveways climb. Terraces with limestone boulder walls are our most common answer: they work with the slope, use local stone and give planting pockets between tiers.

Deer pressure is heavy, and so is the wildlife generally. We design with deer-resistant plants, fence to keep deer out of the areas that matter, and keep native brush where it can stay.

HOAs and permits

Helotes has a mix: rural properties with no HOA, and subdivisions with detailed deed restrictions on fencing, lighting and structures. The City of Helotes also has its own permit and tree preservation rules, and parts of the area fall in the extraterritorial jurisdiction rather than city limits. We confirm which rules apply to your address during design.

Water restrictions

Water service in and around Helotes comes from SAWS and from other providers and private wells, depending on the address, each with its own drought rules. On larger lots we irrigate only the areas near the house and let native areas live on rainfall.

What Helotes clients say

  • Over 600 feet of pipe fence on rock and they didn't miss a day. Posts are straight, the gate swings level and they set it up for an opener we added later. They called before every delivery.

  • Our backyard was too steep and rocky to use. Now it's three planted terraces and a flat spot at the top for chairs and a fire bowl. They brought in boulders I didn't think would fit through the gate. Great crew.
