Most of our San Antonio work is on the north side: Stone Oak, Shavano Park, Alamo Heights, the Dominion and the neighborhoods along 281 and I-10 heading into the Hill Country. These are established homes with good bones, mature trees and backyards that were built once, by a builder, and never really finished.
Our San Antonio clients usually want to live outside more. That means shade, a place to cook, a fire for winter evenings and lighting that makes it all usable after dark, with planting that doesn't need babysitting through a South Texas summer.
Local conditions
North San Antonio sits on the edge of the Edwards Plateau. Many lots have a few inches of topsoil over caliche or fractured limestone, and builders often scraped even that away. We find out on the site walk by digging, then plan for it: rock removal in the price, raised or amended beds, and trees chosen for shallow alkaline soil.
Closer in, in Alamo Heights and Olmos Park, soils are deeper and darker, and the challenge is decades-old trees and roots under everything you'd like to build.
Stone Oak and the far north side roll; many backyards fall several feet from the house, enough to need a step or a low wall. Inside Loop 410 the ground is gentler, and the work is about fitting new patios and structures around existing trees and older drainage.
Most north-side communities, including Stone Oak's many sub-associations, Rogers Ranch and the Dominion, require architectural approval for patio covers, pergolas, kitchens, fences and front yard changes. Patio covers and outdoor kitchens with gas also need City of San Antonio permits. We prepare both and run them at the same time so neither holds up the other.
San Antonio Water System sets year-round rules and stricter drought stages tied to the Edwards Aquifer. Year-round, sprinklers can't run in the middle of the day; in drought stages they're limited to one assigned day a week based on your address. Drip irrigation and hand watering are treated more generously. SAWS has also offered landscape rebates and coupons for replacing turf with water-wise planting; we check what's current for your address before pricing.

They kept my two old Mexican plums and built the whole garden around them. Two years later everything is full, something is always blooming, and I water once a week at most. The flagstone walk is level and gorgeous.
