Why Pecan Hollow

Designed to grow. Built to last.

Marisol Ortega drew plans and Wade Kessler laid stone. For years they handed projects to each other across two companies, and every handoff lost something. In 2013 they started one company instead: the person who designs your yard walks the site with the crew that builds it.

One project lead
A named lead owns your design, schedule and walkthrough, and sends a photo update every Friday.
Native-first planting
Cedar elm, Turk's cap, Lindheimer muhly, cenizo: plants sized for Edwards Plateau soil and drought.
3-year warranty
Plants, workmanship and lighting fixtures, in writing. Three times the one-year norm.
Fixed-price proposals
Itemized, with a 3D render, before any deposit. We probe for rock and soil on the site walk; anything outside the proposal's scope is quoted in writing before work goes ahead.

  2. Step 2: Design and fixed price

A scaled plan, a 3D render and an itemized proposal with a fixed price, before any deposit. One round of revisions included.

  3. Step 3: Build with one lead

One named project lead runs your job start to finish, with our own masons and crews and a photo update every Friday.

  4. Step 4: Walkthrough and warranty

We walk the finished yard with you, set the irrigation and lights, and hand over a written 3-year plant and workmanship warranty.

Materials & craft

What we build with, and why it lasts here

A Hill Country yard is only as good as what it’s made of. Thin soil over limestone, clay that swells and shrinks, and long dry summers punish shortcuts.

Texas cream limestone

Cut and chopped limestone from Hill Country quarries for walls, steps and seat walls. Every wall sits on a gravel footing with a perforated drain behind it, so clay that swells in May doesn't push it out of plumb by August.

Buff flagstone

Our default patio stone: cool underfoot, tight joints, and set on at least 4 inches of compacted crushed limestone. Dry-laid with decomposed granite for a looser look, or mortared on a slab under furniture.

Western red cedar and steel

Pergolas, patio covers and fences in rough-sawn cedar on concrete footings, with black steel brackets and ties sized for Hill Country wind. Sealed at install and again at your first-year visit.

Native and adapted plants

At least 70% of every planting plan: cedar elm, Turk's cap, cenizo, autumn sage, Lindheimer muhly, inland sea oats. They take caliche, clay, deer and a 100-degree August, which is why we can warranty them for three years.

Hear from our clients

Loved by Hill Country homeowners

  • Our backyard was a mud slide. Pecan Hollow turned it into two terraces with a patio and pergola, and the price we signed was the price we paid. Danny sent a photo update every Friday. The walls haven't moved an inch through two wet springs.

    Laura M. · Boerne · Google review
  • We fought the grass under our live oaks for ten years. Marisol showed us a 3D model of a shade garden instead, and that's what we got. The deer leave it alone, and the oaks lit up at night are the best thing about the house.

Ellen K. · Fair Oaks Ranch · Google review
  • Water used to stand against our house for days. They regraded and put in a French drain, and after four inches of rain the yard was dry the next morning. New grass, beds around the pecans and a fence that keeps our dogs home.

FAQ

Common questions

How much does a landscaping project cost?

Most of our design-build projects land between $25,000 and $250,000. A native front yard is often $25,000 to $40,000; a backyard with a patio, pergola and planting is often $60,000 to $120,000. Smaller projects, like new sod or a bed refresh, start at about $3,000. You get an itemized fixed price with a 3D render before any deposit. We take repair calls of any size too, such as a broken sprinkler head or a dark lighting zone; the minimum service call is $150.

What does the 3-year warranty cover?

Plants we install, our workmanship on stone, structures and irrigation, and lighting fixtures, for three years from your walkthrough. If a plant dies while the irrigation runs to our schedule, we replace it. Deer, freezes beyond a plant's hardiness and outside damage aren't covered.

How soon can you start?

Site walks are usually within a week or two. Design takes two to three weeks. Builds typically start four to eight weeks after you sign, sooner for small jobs and later in spring, our busiest season. HOA review and permits can add time, and we plan for both.

Do you subcontract the work?

No. Our own designers, masons and crews do the work, led by one project lead. We bring in licensed specialists only for things the law requires, such as electrical connections, gas lines and engineering for tall walls, and we coordinate them for you.
