Large shade tree over a mowed backyard lawn, Seguin

Landscaping in Seguin

Seguin is pecan country. The town calls itself home of the world's largest pecan, and plenty of backyards here have five or six mature trees older than the houses. Those trees are the reason people buy here, and the shade they cast is the reason grass won't grow under them.

Seguin also sits on flat ground along the Guadalupe River, and on clay that holds water. Most of the Seguin projects we take on start with drainage, then move on to the lawn, the beds and a fence for the dogs.

Local conditions

What shapes a Seguin yard

Soil

Seguin soils are mostly deep clay and clay loam, with sandier ground near the river. They're fertile and great for pecans and turf in the sun, but they drain slowly and shrink and swell with the seasons, which is hard on slabs and fences. We build fences on steel posts set deep, patios on extra base, and beds with compost on top rather than tilled deep into the clay.

Terrain and slope

Flat. Many Seguin backyards have less than a foot of fall across the whole lot, and older homes often sit lower than the yard around them. After a storm, water stands against the back of the house for days. We regrade with laser levels to create a gentle fall away from the slab and carry water to the street or ditch through French drains and swales.

HOAs and permits

Older Seguin neighborhoods rarely have HOAs, which gives more freedom on fences, structures and planting. Newer subdivisions on the east and north sides do, with rules on fence height and style and front yard turf. We check deed restrictions either way, and patio covers and new electrical still need City of Seguin permits.

Water restrictions

The City of Seguin and the water supply corporations around it set their own drought stages and watering schedules. Seguin's clay holds water longer than Hill Country caliche, so we program cycle-and-soak runs to stop runoff and avoid overwatering, which matters as much here as watering limits do.

What Seguin clients say

  • Patio cover went up in three weeks once the permit came through. Fans are quiet, the metal roof matches the house and the beds they added along the back are already full. Fair price, written down before they started.

  • Water used to stand against our house for days. They regraded and put in a French drain, and after four inches of rain the yard was dry the next morning. New grass, beds around the pecans and a fence that keeps our dogs home.
